When the economy went bad, Jose was laid off and unable to find another job. Carmen’s income meant they could barely make the house payment. They got behind on the credit cards, and the interest rates skyrocketed.

When Jose got paid unemployment it helped with daily expenses, but they still couldn't pay off their credit cards. As they fell farther and farther behind, they began to receive harassing phone calls and threats of lawsuits from the credit card companies. One company even threatened to garnish Carmen’s wages, which could have led to them losing their home.

After meeting with Mr. Enmark, they elected to file a Chapter 7 which allowed the discharge of all of their credit card debt. With this action, their home is secure. Their cars are safe. This fresh start allows Jose to breathe easier as he continues his search for a new job.
