What Is the Automatic Stay?

When a bankruptcy petition is filed, creditors, with a few exceptions which are listed in the automatic stay statute, are stayed (or stopped) from taking further action to collect the debts you owe. All creditors you list are sent notice of the bankruptcy case filing and automatic stay.  This means foreclosures, repossessions, and all creditor contact by phone or mail must be stopped.
